Get Your Website Sub-Pages Fishing For You
The Sub-pages on your Website are often neglected as part of a web based business strategy.
Website owner tend to spend most of their time trying to improve the PR value of the home page and get backlinks to their home page as part of the SEO strategy. But if you think about the issues for a moment you will see how hard and fruitless this can become.
With the home page you can only focus on about 5 keywords and you may spend hours carefully constructing your metatags and text content to maximise the effectiveness of your chosen words. BUT the words you choose have to be general words rather than specific – e.g. referring to a Country rather than a Town. This means that you will be completing with the well-established sites that have thousands of backlinks already established and you set yourself an impossible task.
Also it is worth thinking about what most people will be searching for. Lets use an example. Say you are developing a website selling vacation rental accommodation in Spain, and your have designed your contents for the keywords: ‘vacation’, ‘rental’, ‘accommodation’, ‘holiday’, Spain. Most people who want a holiday in Spain will search for a specific location e.g. ‘Barcelona’, rather than ‘Spain’ or the other destination. They may also be highly specific about the accommodation type they are looking for e.g. ‘Vacation flats for rent in Barcelona’. They will not find your home page!
The trick is to focus on your sub-pages and get them fishing for you. Google and the other search engines will use your site map and hopefully index all of them. The sub-pages have their own identity and appear individually in the search results. You could design a sub-page specifically for ‘vacation rental in Barcelona’ and this would save you having to buy a specific domain name for that page. Of course the PR rating of a sub-page will never be as high as that for your home page, but with a bit of effort you can add literally thousands of sub-pages each with their own set of specifically targeted key words. All these pages will be out there fishing for customers and fishing for natural backlinks for your site. Sure it is a lot of work as you will need to devote a lot of effort in designing the pages to ensure Google and the other search engines will index your pages. This includes making sure that your metatags and text contents are not duplicates and getting deep backlinks for the sub-pages. But it is much cheaper that buying domain names for all the thousands of pages you want to develop. You will find that there is a lot less competition in terms of the PR value for the specific pages, and values of 1 or 2 will generally get you on the first page of the search results. You can even choose your page name to closely align with your keywords, e.g. ‘rentinbarcelona’ which would have long gone as a choice for a domain name!
